When Greyson went on a fifth-grade school field trip to Jekyll Island, Georgia, he was assigned an animal to study that he had to research and find on the island. Then he had to present his work at a showcase, and one component was to create a sculpture of the creature from discarded items, such as plastic. Greyson’s creature was the marsh periwinkle snail, and his sculpture is above. He made it out of a white bleach bottle with water bottle eye stalks and blue bottle cap eyes. He used white paper and cardboard to hold it together. There were originally three green plastic bottles; one is seen in the background, which was the marsh grass the snail lives in. The best part was that he requested I display it in our home with my plastic art so that we could be “a plastic art family.” Love!

Canvas painted ocean blue with plastic trash pieces in the shape of a sea serpent and bottom of ocean lined in plastic pieces to look like coral or the ocean floor.

I can’t speak much to Greyson’s process, but one Fall break afternoon, I gave him a canvas to paint, and then set out the cleaned plastic trash pieces. I helped him with the Tacky glue at points, but overall, I let him design and build the whole piece. He decided to create a version of Jormungandr (also spelled Jormungand), a giant sea serpent from Norse mythology. The title of his piece is simply a misspelling. There is an ocean floor or a coral reef along the bottom. I love it, and this piece hangs in our hallway!
